Are you planning on trying out any of the enhanced visual effects?
(look up Compiz on youtube)
Many people that see these effects get excited about trying Ubuntu (more so, than if they saw a boring old OS)
For starters...go to System-->Preferences-->Appearance-->Visual Effects tab (any setting besides "none" may require a video driver to be installed)
The "Extra" setting will get you into using Compiz (wobbly windows, cube, min/max window effects...etc.)

For full control of Compiz, you will need to access the Synaptic Package Manager and search for "CompizConfig Settings Manager" and enable the install. (you can search for "compiz" and the settings manager will be in the list)
After the install you will find a new option in System-->Preferences titled "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings"

This is where all the fun is located!

Oh, and yeah, we might need to get around to some non-command line documentation. It's just that the command line is the same for everybody, whereas...well I told you about GNOME and KDE. I'm using KDE so I keep having to think hard to remember where GNOME puts things (since I can't just peek to cheat).

Just wanted to say thanks for blogging these experiences. It's really good to hear how new users see things. FWIW, I agree: the SCIM setup is stupid, no you :)

And yes, a lot of things should "just work", like they do on Macs. On a mac, syncing with my phone is a piece of cake. On both Linux and Windows, I've yet to get it done in a reliable (and safe!) way. But I think that's as much a question of resources, as good design.

More generally... stick with it! Ubuntu really is great. As a developed-country IT pro, it saves me so much trouble every day. I know it means a lot to others, even at the other end of the tech/economic spectrum, because they can get an affordable computer in Africa, say. I hope you're proud of your husband (and yourself!) for being involved in this great project :)

Anyway, SCIM is really for people like me that type in non-Latin languages like Japanese. If you just want to be able to type things like € or © or é, what you ought to do is go to System -> Preferences -> Keyboard, go to the Layouts Tab, and click the Add button. Choose US International (Alt Gr dead keys). Then get rid of the regular US layout. That layout lets you click your right alt key (in the 80s, they wrote "AltGr" on that key) and e simultaneously to get é. Or you can hit right-alt with shift and ", let go, and hit u to get ü. Those are some examples. Right-alt plus ~ will put a ~ above whatever letter's after it too, letting you type ñ.
